National economic activity maintained its upward trajectory in June 2026. The Monthly Indicator of Economic Activity of Ecuador (IMAEc) recorded year-over-year growth of 2.2%, driven mainly by the performance of the services, trade, manufacturing, and construction sectors. This result reflects greater dynamism in most economic activities, which offset the contractions recorded in oil and mining, as well as in agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing.
With year-over-year growth of 2.6% and a contribution of 1.2 percentage points (pp), the services sector was the main driver of IMAEc growth. This performance was related, among other factors, to increased electricity generation and greater lending activity in the financial system, particularly in the productive, consumer, microcredit, and mortgage segments.
Trade grew 4.0% compared to June 2025 and contributed 0.6 pp to the indicator’s growth. This performance was accompanied by greater dynamism in sales of vehicles, fuels, and other products traded in the domestic market.
Manufacturing recorded growth of 4.2% and contributed 0.5 pp. Among the activities that favored this result were shrimp processing and preservation, cement production, and, notably, the production of petroleum derivatives, associated with the recovery of refineries’ processing capacity. Construction, for its part, grew 3.9% year over year and contributed 0.2 pp to IMAEc performance.
By contrast, the oil and mining sectors showed a contraction of 3.4%, mainly due to lower domestic crude oil production and a reduction in the volume of mining exports. Likewise, agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing recorded a decline of 1.5%, amid lower export volumes of cocoa, bananas, and fishing and aquaculture products.
Non-oil activity keeps its momentum
The non-oil IMAEc grew 2.3% year over year and remained the main driver of economic activity. Meanwhile, the oil IMAEc rose 0.8%, due to an increase in the production of petroleum derivatives, which offset lower crude extraction.
Between January and June 2026, the Ecuadorian economy accumulated growth of 2.0% compared to the same period of 2025. The main contributions came from services (2.6%), manufacturing (3.8%), construction (3.4%), and trade (2.1%).
The IMAEc, prepared by the Central Bank of Ecuador, makes it possible to monitor the monthly evolution of economic activity using short-term indicators ahead of the availability of quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP) results. Its calculation incorporates six major economic activities: agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing; oil and mining; manufacturing; construction; trade; and services, in addition to net taxes on products.
