On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, an attempted robbery took place by more than 20 heavily armed criminals at kilometer 90 of the Cuenca-Molleturo highway, against a convoy of the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) transporting monetary values.

With deep regret, we inform that this event claimed the life of a member of our banking security team. Furthermore, as a result of this attack, eight employees of the Central Bank of Ecuador were injured and are receiving care at various medical facilities in the country.

Thanks to the brave and timely reaction of the BCE security team, the robbery of the monetary assets being transported in an armored vehicle by this institution was prevented. This heroic action demonstrates the unwavering commitment and professionalism of a great human team to their institution and their country.

The BCE coordinated with the National Police and the Ecuadorian Army to ensure the protection of the monetary assets. Additionally, it will work with the Attorney General’s Office to provide all necessary information to clarify this atrocious event and apprehend those responsible for this vile attack that endangered the lives of the institution’s security personnel and the public’s resources.
