The Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) presents the main results of the Bioeconomy Thematic Account (CTB), an innovative tool that allows for a comprehensive quantification of this sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and an analysis of its strategic integration within the national production system.
At the close of 2024, bioeconomy represented 16.6% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), consolidating its weight within the country’s productive structure. Its performance followed the general trend of the economy, which faced a complex year marked by contraction. In this context, the bioeconomy registered a variation of -0.6%, lower than that of the national GDP (-1.9%), demonstrating a greater capacity for resilience compared to other sectors.
Despite this challenging scenario, the bioeconomy maintains a key role in the production system. It stands out for its high levels of self-sufficiency and a growing orientation towards international markets. At the same time, the sector is moving towards activities that generate greater added value and expand production diversity, contributing to a more sustainable economy that is less dependent on a few sectors.
This performance reflects both the strengthening of traditional sectors, such as agriculture and agribusiness, and the growth of industries that utilize biological resources. Together, these factors contribute to a more integrated, dynamic, and sustainable economy.
In this context, the President of the Financial and Monetary Policy and Regulation Board, Gustavo Camacho Dávila, participated in the closing ceremony of the Technical Assistance Fund for Bioeconomy, an initiative led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, administered by the Sustainable Environmental Investment Fund, and with the cooperation of the French Development Agency.
During his remarks, he emphasized that the Bioeconomy Thematic Account is a key tool for generating strategic information that enables evidence-based decision-making, and underscored that this progress reflects the value of collaborative work and the commitment among institutions to promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development. Through these initiatives, the Central Bank of Ecuador reaffirms and strengthens its commitment to generating quality, timely and transparent statistical information that allows for a clearer and more precise understanding of the contribution of the bioeconomy to the country’s economic development.
