The Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) launched the Initiative for the Construction of Ecuador’s Oceanic Thematic Account, a proposal aimed at strengthening economic statistics related to the marine and coastal sector and highlighting the contribution of oceanic natural capital to the country’s economic development.
Ecuador’s Oceanic Thematic Account will measure and highlight the contribution of marine natural capital to the gross domestic product, recognizing that economic growth must consider the sustainability of ecosystems present in coastal, marine, and oceanic zones.
As part of this initiative, the Ecosystem Account of Ecuador’s Insular Exclusive Economic Zone will also be updated using a chain-linking methodology. This will strengthen the macroeconomic consistency of the results and facilitate their officialization and periodic updating.
This initiative complements other efforts undertaken by the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) to strengthen institutional management, including the launch of Ecuador’s Bioeconomy Satellite Account, which highlights the strategic value of biological resources for the country’s development, and the “Greening the Central Bank of Ecuador” project, aimed at incorporating sustainability criteria into its institutional processes.
In this way, the Central Bank of Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to generating high-quality technical information that will allow for a better understanding of the ocean’s contribution to the national economy and support decisions geared toward the country’s sustainable development.
